Kox's Brain/Heart painting on the invitation card is now appearing simultaneously (courtesy of Galerie Toxic) in a special exhibition in Switzerland, which opened September 3, 2011. Following is the artist's explanation of this complex image:

BRAIN/HEART (2010-2011, painted in Bimini, Bahamas):

This painting illustrates how the brain and the heart are tied together in a complex communication system that produces electrical frequencies linked too the spiritual realm.

Lao Tzu, mystic philosopher of ancient China, described a small "gateway to heaven and earth" in the center of the brain behind the eyes.

The pineal gland is at the exact geometrical center of the brain.

French philosopher Rene Descartes suggested that the pineal gland is the "seat of the soul" (1649). Modern scientists have discovered a correlation between pineal gland activation and spiritual meditation. They have also discovered that when subjects enter the meditative state and experience visions and feelings of the presence of God, their brains produce specific and distinct electromagnetic wave patterns from the temporal lobes. When these same frequencies are artificially introduced into the brain using computerized electromagnets, they sometimes stimulate visions and otherworldly experiences including the presence of God. This is not an indication that God exists only in the brain, but rather that the brain is a communication system between the visible and invisible realms.

Dr. J. Andrew Armour, in 1991, revealed that the heart contains an area of neurons, neurotransmitters and cells exactly like those of the brain that qualify it as a "little brain" in the heart. It can act independently of the cranial brain to "learn, remember, feel and sense." The heart communicates with the brain via nerves in the spinal column. Many scriptural references speak of the heart thinking and feeling.

The brain in the heart and brain in the head work in unison to create impulses that can open portals to spiritual realms and act as a communication system to the heavenly. Positive thinking, faith and belief are keys that open the veil.

In Genesis chapter 28, Jacob saw angels ascending and descending through the portal of heaven. This was at a place called Luz ("almond tree") which is also the Hebrew word for "gland." Jacob experienced the portal again when he wrestled with God at Peniel (Gen. 32) which is Hebrew for "the face of God."

Peniel is a reference to the pineal gland, or as Descartes called it "the seat of the soul." One of the English pronunciations of pineal is exactly the same as the Hebrew peniel, "the face of God." Jacob's Luz-Peniel experiences are an analogy to the pineal gland.

The pineal gland secrets a fluid that is much responsible for dreams and visions. It is located in a cavern in the middle of the brain, like the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies, and metaphorically you are the temple of God.

Near the bottom of the painting, an actual photo of the Atomium hangs above the depiction of the photographer who is being beaten and robbed by SABAM, the copyright police of Belgium, as they smash his camera (symbolic of the strict photography rules in Belgium). It is an imaginary self-portrait (Kox) in protest of the insane law that takes away an artist's right to photograph or paint a picture of a public building in Belgium, specifically the Atomium, without accrediting the copyright to SABAM and paying them a percentage of any sales.

Norbert H. Kox; rebel with a cause
When in 1974 a prayer saves him from an acid trip gone wrong, the life of biker and troublemaker Norbert H. Kox (1945) changes. After receiving an inner calling from God, he gives away his worldly possessions and withdraws into the Wisconsin woods. From then on his life is dedicated to studying the Word of God in its original language: Hebrew. Kox aims to unlock hidden messages in the Bible using a digital matrix called the ‘Bible Code’ and to demonstrate links between events in the past, present and future. He came to realize that modern Christianity, as well as secular society, is a vehicle of evil. From Roman Catholic Christianity to the Freemasons, from Santa Claus to Sallman’s popular Head of Christ, occult powers are at work everywhere. Exhibiting some of the most remarkable outsider & visionary artists, Eloquent Obsessions
is a collaboration between Orleans House Gallery and the Henry Boxer Gallery.
Amongst the 25 internationally recognised artists on display, highlights will include a group
of extraordinary works by the enfant terrible of the outsider art world, Henry Darger
(1892-1973). Also showcased are artists from the Maria Gugging Psychiatric Clinic
in Austria, classic English outsiders Scottie Wilson and Madge Gill, and an important collection of schizophrenic watercolours by celebrated Edwardian cat artist Louis Wain, painted during his last years at Napsbury asylum in the 1930's.

NOTE:The Norbert Kox visionary works from Bimini, Bahamas, are mostly esoteric paintings based on the transference of energy between the physical and spiritual realms.Bimini is a tiny island in the Bermuda Triangle and is known for a high concentration of spiritual energy and healing vortexes, attributed to it's location in the electromagnetic grid. Some believe Bimini is the tiny speck of land that remains of Atlantis. In 1933 Edgar Cayce predicted that evidence of Atlantis would be found in 1968 or 1969 in the waters of Bimini. An amazing discovery was made in 1968 when a plane flying over Bimini spotted an underwater structure that has become known as the Bimini Road or the Stones of Atlantis. This was a controversial issue until recently when underwater archeologists disclosed irrefutable evidence of perhaps the world's oldest seaport, in about 15 feet of water just off Bimini's north-west shoreline. The Bimini Road was in fact an ancient harbor of a long forgotten civilization.

Sacred Pastures-The Horse Hospital, London, June 7-28, 2008:

"The dark interior of the Horse Hospital once more provided an atmospheric setting for an exhibition of work by artists of unusual individuality. The leading figure in the exhibition, Wisconsin visionary Norbert Kox, was on hand to talk about the religious beliefs and explain how they give meaning to his imagery. Kox's particular brand of apocalyptic vision was well represented by both painting and print, including an example from his series of the portrait of Christ as anti Christ.* Cathy Ward's intricate and obsessive craper board drawings were powerful and enovative. Some were rambling and free. Others more formal with centrally based composition, their overall effect enhanced by carved wooden frames. Animated video versions of her drawings added movement and complexity to her imagery. Eric Wright's paintings seem to fall in between the other artists in the show, with landscapes peopled with quasi-Biblical scenes, coupled with quotations formed on celestial banners." Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (collaborative sculpture by Professor David Damkoehler and Norbert H. Kox)

Norb Kox and I collaborated on this faculty show artwork. We have worked together for many years teaching sculpture and together we should be in the faculty show. I have always admired Norb’s calligraphy, which can be found in pencil on many of his paintings. I suggested that we design forms, which would be covered with his writing.

I pictured the words as operating as texture at first sight and then on close inspection one can read the text. Artist Shirin Neshat uses Persian calligraphy to cover photographs and Cai Guo-Qiang and other Chinese artists have used calligraphy to similar effect. Norb and I decided to use very thin sheet metal to make the forms and paint the surface in white primer with black paint pen for the calligraphy. I have been interested in using perforations as a way to fold metal without the need for a brake. A brake is a sheet metal shop tool used for folding metal. I thought of using perforations some time ago and in the meanwhile the design group Blu Dot created a series of furniture using the same concept – they got their idea from a pizza box.

We made the forms in an intuitive way, making them up as we went along. After completing two of them, I said that they reminded me of certain ‘70s chopper gas tanks. Then I said, “what if the four horsemen of the apocalypse were actually riding choppers rather than horses”. It became an inspiring idea for Norb, along with a background in chopper culture and art; the Apocalypse is an important aspect of his study and artwork. Norb’s website is apocalypsehouse.com and his most recent book is The End is Come: New York in Prophecy. With the four horsemen in mind we created four “chopper tanks”. Each tank is associated with each of the four horsemen. The four horsemen, who figure in art history as well as the bible, are Death, Famine, Pestilence, and War and each has a color: white, red, black and pale (pale green). But the chopper tanks explain this, Norb’s writing spells all this out – with his art, erudition, humor and urgency.

"New Dimensions," exhibit of the art of David Klein and Norbert H. Kox

Dear friends,

Many Green Bay area residents have asked when I will be exhibiting my works in this area so they can see them again. I really like to show my art in my hometown for you to see, but it does not happen often because of the lack of venues here. My works are exhibited around the world but until now have not graced the walls of a coffee shop.

My very close friend David Klein has set up an exhibition of his artwork at Kavarna's Vegetarian Coffeehouse, 112 S. Broadway, Green Bay, Wisconsin, and has invited me to hang some of my works in the show with him. I've accepted his gracious offer and brought out several new works for you to see.

We have exhibited side-by-side Many times throughout the years, multiple times at the Neville Public Museum in Green Bay, several times at the West Bend Art Museum where we each had simultaneous exhibits, and again in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His paintings have appeared in more than 175 exhibitions.

David says, "I am proud and happy to exhibit with Norb Kox, and without his help and encouragement I would not have exhibited as often as I have over the years."

The visionary works that I am showing are from my last visit to Bimini, Bahamas, December 2006-February 2007. These are esoteric paintings based on the transference of energy between the physical and spiritual realms.

Bimini is in the Bermuda Triangle and is known for a high concentration of spiritual energy and healing vortexes, attributed to it's location in the electromagnetic grid. Some believe Bimini is the tiny speck of land that remains of Atlantis. Edgar Cayce in 1933 had predicted the remains of Atlantis would be found in 1968 or 1969 in the waters of Bimini. An amazing discovery was made in 1968 when a plane flying over Bimini spotted an underwater structure that has become known as the Bimini Road or the Stones of Atlantis. This was a controversial issue until recently when underwater archeologists disclosed irrefutable evidence of perhaps the world's oldest seaport, in about 15 feet of water just off Bimini's north-west shoreline.

"New Dimensions" is an exhibit of the art of David Klein and Norbert H. Kox.

The exhibition which starts Monday, November 26, will not have a formal opening night reception, but later a MEET THE ARTISTS reception will coincide with a book signing for Kox's 221-page book, The End Is Come. For anyone who has ever wondered about Kox's motivation and messages this book will clear things up. Date and time to be announced sometime during the course of the exhibition.

William Thompson has asked me to send something to you right away. I am reading the book again, since I did not mark anything the first time through. Right now I do not have time to build the entire list. William now has the book and can start putting together his own list.
If the whole book were correct, except for just one deliberate deception that would damage our reputations as artists and ministers, then that one statement would negate any good that had been written about us in the book. Without presenting an entire list at this time, one such damaging statement is submitted here:

"At the top of the painting it says, VICARIOUS, which Thompson explains is the word written on the pope's crown. Vertically down one side VICARIOUS is written again, but this time the letters are read by the artists as Roman numerals: V = 5; I = 1; C = 100. Thompson and Kox have this somehow adding up to 666 (Thompson did something similar, with the Latin word and VICIVILIID, in Revelation Revealed), though I keep getting 106, which deflates some of the conspiracy punch of the painting. Even after talking about it for several minutes, I'm still not, numerically speaking, getting it." (pp. 84-85, The Colorful Apocalypse)

Attached is a jpg detail of the section, of Idolatry, to which Greg Bottoms is referring in this text. In the picture you will see clearly the section of the painting that Bottoms was looking at with Thompson, while they stood before the painting at AVAM. Thompson has told me the above conversation never took place. This is evident to me, since Bottoms could not have made this statement while looking at the painting. We know that he is very intelligent and can add the simple numbers he is looking at. The letters which have roman numeral values are clearly displayed on the upper left side of the painting, but have conveniently been partially cropped from the image on the front cover of the book. It seems they had to be cropped or the cover of the book would have contradicted what Bottoms has written.

The cropped cover does not make sense, because the cropping shifts the painting to one side and puts it out of balance. Therefore it is quite certain that it was not cropped for aesthetic reasons. The only apparent reason for the cropping is to hide the fact that the Vicarius Filii Dei actually does add up to 666. If this were known, the readers would see the lie perpetrated by Bottoms and would wonder if they could trust anything else he said. The validity of the entire book would be jeopardized by that one discrepancy.

Bottoms makes it sound like Thompson and I are lying about it adding up to 666, when he is deliberately lying by saying it only adds up to 106. He says that "deflates some of the conspiracy punch of the painting," which seems to be exactly what he had intended to do. Evidently it is something he does not agree with, so he paints us to be deceivers. We have done our research thoroughly, and never paint anything that is not backed up with documentation.

William Thompson and I, have established our careers as serious visionary artists. People know what our work stands for and they take it seriously. If this book is allowed to go out to the world, with this deliberate deception about William and me, our careers will be over. No one will ever take us seriously again. This seems to be what Bottoms has aimed for in this writing. Many outsider and visionary artists are quirky, and their messages get laughed-off. Often rightfully. William Thompson and I do not fit that category, but if bottoms has his way with this book, we may be placed in the pigeon hole marked "Looney."

Thompson and I agree on what we paint as collaborations. Like anyone else, we do not agree on all things, in all areas of life. This book seems to give us one mind, as I am mentioned in Thompson's section, and he in mine. So much that what is said about him, becomes also said about me, at least often insinuated. And vise versa. We are made out to be somewhat white supremacist, racist, anti-Semitic, anti Christian, insane and more. The mixed up stuff about Jews, Israelites and Hebrews is ridiculous. Neither of us would have said it the way it is written. Either Bottoms had poor notes or he purposely contrived this, like he did with the "106."
Please let me know what you intend to do about the deliberate fabrication of the 666 only being 106, and the insinuation that we faked it.

Can you offer an acceptable solution to the matter at hand?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and intentions without delay.

I have compiled about 7 pages of discrepancies in the book The Colorful Apocalypse and it gets larger daily. This is a very serious matter and I believe the biggest clear cut case of liable I have ever seen involving a writer and publisher. Greg Bottoms creates his own environment and writes for the subjects in his fictional book. He has so cruelly lied about my mother and my brother, my mother has never been hard of hearing.

I have already wasted a week on this, now I recommend we retain a lawyer to proceed.

Why this outrage, this descent into madness? Page-113 (I have a headache-the band mojo of alcohol,) Greg said this, maybe this is his problem. "Her lips were the color of over ripe cherries." I have never heard such hurtful lies about my mother. Greg Bottoms creates his own world in the book the way he wants to present it with just enough truth to make it sound believable. I intend to call his bluff on the tapes, the tapes are the best thing to prove the book lies. He slam dunks everything we stand for. Greg Bottoms is not a credible author, only my journal is unaltered.

You have enough information to know that this book is a distortion and ridicule of us and our work from Norbert's report of last Friday. In my opinion the author is insane and has left a trail of proof that what he says is not true. However, that does not protect you from responsibility. 117 of the181 pages are about us. Total recall is the only way to begin to correct this problem. This is outrage by Bottoms who seems to have multi personalities. Why is Chicago U. Press party to this descent into madness?

Greg Bottoms in colorful apocalypse even lied about my mother saying she was "made up, her lips were the color of over ripe cherries", my mother has never used makeup in her life or worn earrings. He said my brother had gold rings, a watch and a gold chain around his neck but this is a vicious lie against my brother who has never worn any gold jewelry. He used curse words (the S word) in the book and made it sound as though he was quoting me. He exploited my vision by describing in great detail my seeing revealed the Book of Revelation and told everything I saw except that is not what I saw and I never have said that. I saw the coming of the Lord and the world on fire. It was 5 years later before I felt lead to paint the Book of Revelation and that is the vision of the apostle John which I have never claimed. This is the biggest case of distortion I have ever known. He also used the N word in another publication that is on the Internet about a black artist who-painted the throne that is in the Smithsonian folk art museum in Washington.

We must aggressively defend ourselves against this abuse. This is the most hurtful person I have ever met.

Norbert has replied to you in a brilliant statement with absolute proof that Greg lied.

He says I lock myself away in the tower but that door has never had a lock on it, it is always open. He admits to having a hangover, he writes fiction about outsider artists. We were told it would be an art book but instead it is a shameful crucifixion.

The Dixie souvenir shop is another of Greg Bottoms inflammatory fabrications as to what I said and what the store owner said, he is a well-known regional artist I met when he was teaching at North Greenville College. He goes on and on with character assassinations.

His quoting me as saying Jesus was white is another one of his lies, I never said it ever.
Greg Bottoms is trying to cause us trouble. We are suffering severe damage everyday.

The Colorful Apocalypse Book by Greg Bottoms.

We wish to give you a chance to voluntarily recall this book because it is mostly fiction and not the truth. It is no wonder Greg switched around to several publishers before he found you because it is my guess others would not publish it. You recall the New York Times had a journalist not long ago that made up stories and got them in a lot of trouble.

First of all the book is deceptive in that the title does suggest the book is full of colorful pictures of the Apocalypse which is and was and has been available to Greg Bottoms who promised us he was writing an art book to show our art but instead he has no images inside the book at all. If Greg wanted to criticize my art work that is acceptable so long as he presented it truthfully and not distorted. Even the paper cover of our art image as printed is obscure until it loses its real message. I had 700 paintings available to him and he promised to send a photographer later. I am sure the University of Chicago Press did not get to where they are in the publishing business by using trash authors.

Many writers have written about our work but never with such a gross disrespect and twisted distortions which create the implications using the politically correct buzz words to charge the atmosphere to make us look like racist and anti-Semitics. Perhaps Bottoms thinks we are two helpless artist that cannot defendthemselves but then he has another thought coming. There is so much good in our art work to write about but he chose to be naive and butcher us taking the short cut to persecution and crucify us. I compare him to Doeg the Edomite who betrayed King David in the Old Testament. What does it take to sell books? Somebody's blood! Greg is an opportunist that discredits true journalism.

Now that you have been informed of the lies and distortions deliberately written into this book, if you continue to distribute them you will be part of the fraud and conspiracy deception we will charge in seeking to have it banned with punitive damages. We're not being paid for you to walk on our backs and use us as guinea pigs to frame all at our expense. Such misinformation is disgusting, damaging and even dangerous in today's atmosphere. It can also be considered Christian persecution. The book is altogether a disgrace. Meanwhile, any review of the book we will do our best to make sure they include our rebuttal. Again I request the book be recalled immediately.

Dear Mr. Neal,

I have just obtained a copy of The Colorful Apocalypse, by Greg Bottoms, from the local Barnes & Nobles. Much of the writing is accurate, but in many places the text has been twisted and fabricated by Bottoms, so that it does not resemble our conversations. He has done such a tremendous job of writing that it becomes extremely sad that he has distorted some areas to complete falsehood. In places he has changed our words to say things totally out of character for either William or myself. In other instances he has actually invented things, to which he sometimes attaches quotation marks, to make it look like one of us said it. I have seen journalism students do this in college, but in the real world this is not acceptable.

When I read the book and saw bottoms' disregard for accuracy, and his tendency toward fabrication, I was shocked and sickened. I have worked many years as a visionary artist and have established a reputation for seriousness, sometimes softened with a little "dark humor," but always backed up and documented with solid research facts. None of my work is done haphazardly. Everything is proven and documented 100% before it is recorded to canvas.

Bottoms presented himself as looking out for our best interests, while in reality he seems to have had his own agenda, which was basically to write a novel rather than a documentary. If the book were sold as a novel people would regard it as fiction, then the erroneous documentation would be less of a detriment. After befriending us, if Bottoms had made us look bad with his own words, it would be his opinion, it would be lawful, although unethical. But when he distorts and invents quotations to present untrue statements it becomes not only unethical, but unlawful as well.

Where he accurately records the facts, it is wonderful. He is a great writer. But where his erroneous and fabricated words enter in, it is very disturbing and damaging. Those who know us will recognize what is out of character, but others will have a false impression. A few well placed, colorfully doctored quotations, destroy any reputation that William or I may have had. Some things that were divulged in confidence, and off the record, were inaccurately stated, when they should not have appeared at all. Mr. Bottoms is a very intelligent man and would not have accidentally made the number of errors that appear in the book, therefore, I can only assume that his defamatory and sometimes libelous statements were not at all accidental. This is very hard to understand, when he was so careful in other areas to present an accurate representation.

I intend to assemble a precise list of the fabrications and distortions, by page number.

Even though it has many good points, the gross errors make me sad that this book was written.

IDOLATRY: THE DRUGGING OF THE NATIONS
2002

Visionary artists, William Thomas Thompson and Norbert H. Kox, both known internationally for their Apocalyptic art, have worked together on an individual canvas, 9.5 ft. x 7 ft., to create a powerful indictment of the apostate universal church system and the traditions of men. It is the first collaborative effort for either of these artists. The piece titled "Idolatry: The drugging of the nations", is a warning against the dangers of religious addiction.

According to Webster, addiction is the state of being given up or over to, as a constant practice; habitual devotion to. Breaking an addiction sometimes produces severe withdrawal symptoms, as in the case of many drugs. Withdrawal means pain. Thus many addicts choose to remain addicted to avoid the pains of withdrawal. Religious addiction, like any addiction, renders the user to a state of irrational behavior. The religious addict clings to false doctrine with a belligerent pride equivalent to that of the drunken alcoholic, refusing to acknowledge his intoxication. He is unwilling to let go of that which is making him feel good even if the security it provides is based on a falsehood. When the truth does not fit organized religion it is rejected by the religious.

This painting is referenced from Revelation 18:23, where the King James translation of "sorceries" comes from the Greek word pharmakia, literally "drugging", symbolically "idolatry". The piece warns against the deceptions of false teachers. It also points out the use of counterfeit images as modern-day idol worship. It is a depiction of and warning against the idolatry that is drugging the end time church, resulting in "religious" addiction, bondage, and death.

Some of the common fatal mistakes are spelled out specifically on the gravestones in the pattern of the Earth Mother’s blue robe: idolatry, harlotry, adultery, necromancy/seance, Sabbath breaking, lies, stealing, witchcraft, false witness, hatred, murder, coveting/envy, haughtiness/pride, swearing/cursing, drunkenness/drugs/alcohol, carnal lust, abortions, falsifying Yahweh’s name, strife, greed, and self-righteousness.

The main idolatry gripping the world and the church today is the love of money. Scripture says, “The love of money is the root of all evil” (1 Timothy 6: 10). This is symbolized in the golden-jeweled crown from which the churches are sprouting. On the crown is the word NOITROBA, which is “abortion” spelled in reverse. The Hebrew word for abortion also means “to fall” or “fallen down”, which describes the state of the modern so-called Christian Church. The bloody paper dolls represent the Slaughter of the Innocents, in three ways: 1- Abortion of the unborn; 2- Victims of the physical molestation and sexual abuse by a perverted clergy; 3- Spiritual desolation and destruction due to falsehoods presented as truths by a blinded hierarchy. Scripture says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4: 6).

The churches on the crown represent the conglomerate one world church system that is to introduce Antichrist for acceptance in the last days.

Kox and Thompson, having both emerged from the clutches of religious addiction, warn against the deceptions of false teachers. Kox came out of a Catholic background, Thompson from the Protestant. Both have had Pentecostal experiences. Their combined diversity of religious knowledge contributes to a balance in identifying the false doctrines of the modern church, with scripture based facts. They identify false religious beliefs and the use of counterfeit images as modern-day idol worship.

The 1940 "Head of Christ", by Warner Sallman, is targeted as a counterfeit Christ. The Greek word anti means "instead of", or "in place of", as well as "opposed to." The Antichrist described in the Bible is an imitation capable of deceiving even the very elect (Matthew 24:23-25; Mark 13:21-23). The elect spoken of are the followers of Christ.

The Sallman image is being correlated to the "idol" shepherd in Zechariah 11:17, with the sword upon his right eye, symbolic of lack of truth. It also symbolizes the head of the Beast (Anti-Christ) that had the wound by the sword but did live (Revelation 13:3). Scripture foretold the people would create an icon of this Antichrist and worship it (Revelation 13:14-18).

In this painting the seven churches and ten steeples symbolize the seven-headed ten-horned beast of the revelatory visions of the apostle John. He sounds the warning, Come out of her and be not partakers of her sins (mistakes). The New Testament word "church" comes from the Greek ekklesia, meaning "called out." The Scriptural church does not refer to a building. It refers to the people who are called out of spiritual bondage into the freedom of truth (principle, John 8:31-32).

This painting also presents historical and etymological references to the name of Jesus being the result of a gradual progression in the English Language, from the Biblical name of Iesu (Yesu: yay-soo): A change which took effect in the 18th century. The gist of the whole piece is to entice the viewer to question traditions and inherited beliefs while embarking on an active search for and investigation of truth. Look to the word of God, not the traditions of men. Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit and search for truth in the Scriptures: "Seek and ye shall find".

These two seasoned visionary artists hope that the revelations in this work will shake the world (or at least a small part of it) from its complacency, to question traditions and inherited beliefs while embarking on an active search for and investigation of truth. They see the true path of spiritual enlightenment as an individual road which must be navigated with the utmost of care, to avoid the pitfalls and disasters associated with the herd-mentality that leads unsuspecting sheep hurdling headlong into the pit (grave) directly on the heels of their blind religious leaders.

This painting should not be perceived as a threat to the true church. That which is true will not be harmed. When all the rotten bark is chipped away and the dead branches are broken off and cast into the fire, that which remains will be healthier and stronger. Sometimes pain is involved in the healing process. Perhaps you can face the temporary discomforts of withdrawal when you realize the only alternative is death.

Art Directors Club 2007 Call For Entries Poster

The painting for this year's ADC Call-for-Entries poster (detail slide show) was executed by Norbert H. Kox. It has been published in Creativity and several other magazines, the San Francisco Chronicle, the internet, and 170,000 posters mailed out. For some odd reason this image has ignited rage in many, which has developed into a major controversy.

The illustration world is buzzing, and is hailing the piece both as the world's best choice for the ADC poster, and the world's worst choice for the ADC poster.

"It seems my work has angered a mob of illustrators, like it often does within the religious population. Many of the furious illustrators are attacking me for everything from choice of poor subject matter, bigotry and antichristian sentiment, to horrible and childish execution of style and technique, while their colleagues are praising the work for accurately depicting the present world scenario and the ills of society in a way that has attracted attention and caused a big enough stir to have become the topic of controversy on numerous websites on the internet."

There has been some heated discussion in the chat boards regarding the most recent Call for Entries poster for the Art Directors Club 86th competition. This discussion raises important issues on the variety of opinions illustrators have about training and professionalism and how illustrators relate to fine art. Perhaps more importantly, it raises larger questions about any art's (specifically Outsider Art) relation to the market and how design and illustration feed off of that market. My presumption here, to be perfectly clear, is that Design and Illustration, are by nature reactionary: they find their life in response to someone else's demands. …
Blurring the boundaries… or are we? As Robert Zimmerman helpfully pointed out, the ADC selected a painting by Norbert Kox for the poster. Kox is an American outsider Christian religious painter. His original paintings are sought after by collectors. He has his own schtick and he's the real thing. So, is the ADC appropriating his good-bad art to emphasize their good-bad trendy image? Maybe an image by Heironymous Bosch would work or is that too acceptable?
It is scary for trained artists to see unschooled and passionate "visionaries" getting all the acclaim. Perhaps it's just the swing of the pendulum. As professional image makes (as opposed to visionaries) we should be used to this sort of shift in taste.

I'm amused by this poster. I think it's topical, the headline is funny, and the artist ( despite his lack of classical training) is passionate about what he does. Lastly, aren't posters supposed to be attention-grabbing? This one seems to be a rousing success when judged in that light...

Well I see the ADC as involving advertising and design primarily, (maybe I'm wrong) and advertising and design are supposed to get attention in creative ways and try to nab our eyeballs from all the oversaturation that exists. I like the poster, the image is interesting, it's clearly "bad" art. I'm not surprised to see it being used as I'm sure many ad's have this art in their collections and on their walls at home. Why should an art director feel compelled to go to a specific little drawer in the big desk of images and pick a traditional illustrator when they can open the real wacky drawer and use the image they did? In a sense the poster is successful as it is getting "buzz" and we are all talking about it. The worst poster to my thinking is one that does not garner any attention and lines the bird cage.Sure this one will at some homes soon too. SI HAS to use traditional illustration on it's poster because it is all about traditional illustration. ADC does not have to as it's about the larger world of art direction and advertising.

Go to the speakeasy. We covered the poster issue last night over a couple of mojitos. Mi final thought is that I hate that piece as an illustration but that I like it as a poster. It's not a poster for SI, so AD's have carte blanche for their choice.It's causing discussion and agitation, anger and happiness. It's doing a fine job. It's not one more beautiful poster. It's dark and sad, as the future of this world would be if we don't take some action.

This is my first look at the poster, but it seems very similar to Joe Coleman's work ( http://www.joecoleman.com/ )I understand Kox is well known, too, but Coleman would never agree to do a poster for advertising (though he was a School of Visual Arts student back in the 70's).

Marc B- I also brought up Coleman's name in the Speakeasy. Very similar and similarly arresting.For what it's worth, Coleman DID do a poster advertising the movie Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer, although the studio balked and it went unused.Tim O'B- Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Some of the skilled and well-respected illustrators that grace the pages of the vaunted American Illustration are, in my opinion, far uglier than this image. Some of the bland, uninspired and predictable images that I see there make me far queasier than this one.

I think Kox is trying to make a point about the Apocalypse or at least the collapse of modern society. Whether or not it's clever is immaterial- he's not a commercial artist. His vision is his own. His paintings are full of his unique vocabulary almost all of which has biblical or apocalyptic symbolism.I very much doubt that Kox is dreaming of a Starbuck's account. My take on him is that he's an artist that creates because he's compelled to and anything beyond that is unintended consequence.I think the Hummers and Starbucks and pampered pets are meant to portray the callous disregard some people have for the Earth and it's mounting problems; an "I've got mine, F*** You" attitude. Is it disingenuous of the ADC to use this image? Maybe. But when you look at the image (apocalypse) and read the headline ( Final Call For Entries?) - well. it's just funny. A visual pun. I know we're only discussing this image, but when it's held up against contemporary ilustartion as it has been repeatedly throughout this conversation then I feel a discussion of contemporary illustration and it's merits is warranted. And I personally feel that this has more energy, honesty and heart than a large portion of the award-winning and celebrated work in the annuals.If, on the other hand, you are simply saying that you think it sucks, well... OK. Maybe it does.

Back in 1985, The Talking Heads, who were all art school graduates if I recall correctly, had outsider artist Howard Finster create cover art for the album Little Creatures, which was followed by Rolling Stone Magazine crediting it as album cover of the year. It wasn't an original thought, exactly. Michael Stipe of the band REM, had commissioned Finster for the cover of Reckoning a couple of years earlier. Never-the-less, it worked for The Talking Heads.Finster, like Kox, had very extreme and disturbing religious views that he voiced through his art. So, it was no surprise that there was considerable shock associated with The Talking Heads, who were clearly pop-culture visionaries of that time, using Finster to visually represent their work. It was an extreme mix of high and low. For one reason or another, the dichotomy made people pay attention. It forced people to think.In the same way, I think there's a lot of shock value for the ADC in using Kox. Shocking an audience is an intentional device for starting important conversations. Nothing wrong with that. I feel that's often valuable and necessary, actually. Art directors can play an important role in doing exactly that, forcing people to think and starting important conversations. Sometimes this can be accomplished by pointing out the sublime and other times it’s best to put a spotlight on the disturbing. With the choice of Kox, they've succeeded in my opinion, with a needed conversation starter for our times.

Well, I don't have a lot to add here! I'll right, I'll add something for whatever it may be worth.I think the poster is pretty great. Isn't the advertising industry inheritently cynical anyway? As for outsider/"lowbrow" art being in, well I'd say it's verging on tired at this point, but the market defines that for us.The image is a pretty accurate reflection of the attitude a lot of people have out there these days in the world. Good for the Ad Industry to at least reflect that, no?

At TexasDesign.com we try to be positive about our profession. We know that there are designers out there with different talents and abilities. But, today, we came across something that is absolutely the worst “Call for Entires” poster ever.

They all came down yesterday when the Art Director’s Club “Call for Entires” poster came to us in the mail. Eagerly pulled off the tape, read the outside flap, unfolded the poster and found (the poster is so bad we do not want this on our front page) …
Sorry TBWA\Chiat\Day, New York this is the worst concept and execution of a “Call for Entires” poster we have ever seen. So much for your “Disruptive Ideas” this concept is negative and poorly executed. I have seen Norbert’s work and while I don’t like the tone, I do appreciate his artist stance, but even this illustration is not up to par for the quality that we have seen in the past. Here is what Richard Metzger, “Disinformation: The Interviews” said about Norbert’s work:
“Contemporary religious painter Norbert Kox is one of America’s most important Visionary artists. His self-described ‘apocalyptic visual parables’ utilize powerful symbolic metaphors aiming to shake modern man from his spiritual malaise and clear away centuries worth of mistranslations of the Bible.”
OK, I am all for “symbolic metaphors” but the art depicted above is simply sophomoric. I look forward to getting a new “Call for Entires” poster and clearing my palette of this distasteful garbage.

Best use of visionary art in a marketing piece: Art Directors Club Call for Entry, with art by Norbert KoxThere's not much competition in this category, but I'm glad the honor goes to an old friend. Green Bay's Norb Kox (above) has a remarkable bio: born the day the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, he served in the military, became an Outlaw biker, and eventually found Christ and spent nine years in the woods near Suring, WI, developing a personal spirituality that arose from intense study of scriptures. While a clever payoff for ADC's "Final Call for Entries" concept, his "apocalyptic visual parables" have so much more detail and depth.

Art Directors Club Call For Entries Takes On Armageddon
I'll admit I didn't study the Art Directors Club call for entries poster when it came in the mail a couple of weeks ago:
It's intended to be the "Final Call For Entries." But over at Little Green Footballs, a right-leaning political blog, the poster was interpreted like this:
It’s an impressive panoply of moonbat leftist self-loathing, a desolate nuclear wasteland populated by Republican political leaders holding hands with the Devil (lower left), Christians throttling Muslims (lower left corner and center), a priest shoving a lollipop into a little boy’s mouth, gas-guzzling Humvees crushing people, Starbucks, Wal-Mart, and a lone polar bear, marooned on an ice floe in a tsunami.

So the Art Directors Club sent out a call for entries for its 86th annual awards. Ho-hum. The accompanying art is a frightscape of apocalyptic imagery featuring Republican leaders holding hands with the devil, Hummers running over people, rising sea levels leading to anorexic surfing polar bears.

Charles Johnson, blogging at Little Green Footballs,has chucked the promotional art into the rightish end of the blogosphere. Oddly enough, of the 424 comments currently, on the site, as many seem to venture into faux-art criticism ("I'll tell you what it isn't ... Guernica") as politics (defense of the featured "neo-cons").
At any rate, from the right-wing blogosphere, it's only a short hop to Fox News, which we've heard is pestering ADC for interviews now.

This image has drawn a lot of negative comment from professional illustrators, partly because it is bad art and partly because if art directors are going to "outsider" (i.e., untrained) artists, that is not good for the illustration business. (Link above may not work due to site security)
It would be a mistake, however, to imagine that any objection by the artists was on grounds of the image's negative content. If anyone takes a look at the political art, and comments, posted on this illustration blog, they will see a level of enraged BDS which surpasses even that at Kos or DU.

As a professional artist let me make a few comments and indulge myself.
First of all, it is executed with extremely bad taste. It is reminiscent of the stoner art my classmates used to bring into class (freshman year). Not that I have anything against stoners actually, but it is proof that this artist has not progressed above a 10th Grade level of technique. The color use is vulgar and done with a touch as light as King Kong.
There is no composition to speak of, other than the discreet placement of the objects. This sort of style was common...before the renaissance. It reflects a primitive mindset. The human beings see to lack structure, and have more in common with cartoon characters than with real people. this is also common in high school-level art. People are like inflated sacks, rather than bones and flesh suspended on bones.
I really could go on forever, but the fact that art directors are advertising for a conference with this....is just pathetic. These people are supposed to be professionals.
So in summary, it is vulgar, childish, obvious, poorly planned, poorly executed, and was obviously committed to the page while the artist was under the influence of marijuana.

As a graphic designer running his own studio and past art director for several major publishing firms I have to say, sadly, that this attitude is rampant in the graphic design industry. I feel like a lone wolf most of the time and avoid political talk with colleagues.
There was even one graphic design magazine that has a running column by two women and one time they printed a list of things they would do and things they would never do. One of the things they said they would never do is "any work for the republican party or a republican". (The art director of the Washington Times wrote them a terse letter and cancelled her subscription)
Another design magazine recently ran a "review" of the U.S. Army website and took every opportunity to slam the military and the Administration in between sentences that actually reviewed the website's merits. Just little snide comments like "oh hey, look, join the Army and kill people. Wow! Neat!" Stuff like that....
And don't even get me started on the political crazies I've worked with the in the world of publishing!

Once you realize that it's drawn by somebody who's mentally ill, and pimped by cretins who lack values, taste, and an actual soul, it's not half-bad. I'm sure I could get something similar out of the homeless people who live under the intersections here in DFW. Come to think of it, if they can get around the cost of art supplies, they'd likely make as much money as they do faking injuries and begging for change at the stop signs. I could be their agent. I'd take payment in grubby singles and malt liquor.

Well, I wouldn't call it Art. It's clearly patterned after Bosch, maybe "The Garden of Earthly Delights"?
But it's not art. It's a tolerably well-drawn polemical cartoon. It's visually rich, and has a lot going on in it, positively chock-a-block with End-times metaphors, and recognizable caricatures of famous politicos and archetypical bogiemen.
I found it kind of entertaining to pore through it and find all the references, like it was a big puzzle picture.
And given that it's being used as a promotional poster for an art contest, it's obviously working, based on the number of comments it's garnered here.
But I still wouldn't hang it on my wall.

This complaint concerns a Yahoo! sponsorship. I could not find a proper place to post this, so I am using the Home Page feedback form.
I was shocked to find out that my Yahoo! Mail subscription fee is supporting a blatantly anti-freedom "art contest" at the Art Directors Club. I showed this piece of "art" to my wife who, too, is a professinal artist and graphic designer. she told me it looks like something you would normally find graffiti'ed on a shithouse wall. Other than that the "artist" shows about as much talent as a cat with a paintbrush on his tail.
I personally figure it is a window inside the mind of a moonbat. They REALLY believe this shit. It just shows me (and confirms what I have felt all along) that anything that "traditional" America is for, they are against. A traditional American becmes a success, (the hummer) they are against it, traditioanl america is Christian, they are against that, too. Traditional America probably thinks that the idea of man-made global warming is pretty much bullshit (I call it a theory on the level of sophistication of believing the earth is flat), they belive man is going to "destroy mother earth". traditional America does not like despots and loves its freedoms, The moonbats go gaga over thugs like castro and Chavez. My wife was telling me about the time she went to an art exhibit in Boston. On one wall was a huge white canvas with a single brown dot on the lower corner. Over to one side these two girls were deep in discussion as to the paintings meaning. After hearing them go on and on about the meaning of this "work of art"m she interrupted them and blurted out, "This isn't art, it is a fucking brown dot! I repeat, there is no art here, it is brown dot!" I swear people who called a turd on a roofing shingle art are phonies who don't want to be exposed as phonies who don't know their asses from a turd on a roofing shingle.

I spent many years in animation for many studios, so I am a professional artist as well. My only nit-pic with your critique is that I would put the developmental age of the artist more in the Jr High/Middle school range. It has a more pubesent quality about it, it's lack of coherence that points to a confused hormonal mind. Much like the artwork of Ralph Steadman (the guy who illustrated Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas). Except in Steadman's case, you could see the underlying talent that is absent. I would also say that the piece is a poorly executed homage to Picasso's Guernica. The piece has absolutly no compisitional value at all and is an example of the sorry state of modern art. I would be a tad less critical if the guy were younger, but at his age he should have attended art school at a time when they were still teaching Academic Art.

I just spotted a copy of the 2007 poster for the Art Director’s Club show on a colleague’s desk yesterday and was morbidly curious to see what the ADC had done for their poster this time, immediately recalling last year’s bizarre and racist image combination.
Steven Heller took the 85th Annual ADC Call For Entries poster to task in Voice on the AIGA site last year at about this same time, and it looks like they’re serving an even bigger helping of the same this year…
I’m ready to accept the “I just don’t get it” stamp on my reaction to this, but it strikes me that there was certainly an intent behind this piece when it was made. I simply don’t understand the advertising strategy or the illustrative choices that have been made in developing this year’s poster, but do find it fortuitous that Bennett commented below on the outsider / insider appreciation of many things naive, folk art, or out-of-bounds in the world of art & design.
I’m no stranger to appreciating the awkward, the off-kilter, and the untrained eye in art, but I’m also able to recognize genuinely bad / poor work when I see it. Naive or not, the ADC poster illustration simply looks like something churned out by a half-trained extremist junior college painter, despite the fact that other work by the same artist, Norbert H. Kox, actually seems to have a lot more punch, composition, and artfulness to it.
More important, though, is trying to parse out what exactly the ADC is attempting to say with this poster. It’s no major stretch to catch the “our world’s going to hell-in-a-handbasket” vibe in culture at the moment, and it’s an easy “read” to see the ADC cashing in on the mass hysteria that seems rampant throughout news events and cultural happenings. Beyond that, however, lie questions about whether the ADC rejects these events, relishes them, simply aims to poke fun at them, or had another joke in mind that just isn’t coming through the mean-spirited, bigoted, and crude imagery included on the poster.
• Is the poster evidence of the character of art direction that the ADC hopes to celebrate?
• Is it in any way indicative of the ADC’s view of the state of things?
• Or, like it looks on its surface, is it just one more flippant potshot at social relevance pigeonholed into a half-baked editorial illustration?
On the heels of last year’s muddy “blinging” of McDonald’s imagery, this just seems to forecast a truly stagnant attitude at the ADC. Too bad they’re willing to trade reputation and prestige in for cheap-ass jokes that won’t clearly indicate whether they’re laughing at or cheering for the stereotyping that’s blatantly on display in these images.

When the advertising for this event was launching we were approached by the Art Director’s Club about helping to promote it. We agreed having not seen this poster. For maybe a day or so we had a little animated gif in our sidebar pointing people to the event. Then Armin posted a link to the poster on SpeakUp. When Bennett and I saw it we decided to pull the ad. We considered posting about it, but decided against it because we didn’t want to give it any more publicity. We came to the conclusion that the only reason the ADC would create something this bad is because they want the shock value and controversy. By talking about it we play into their hands.
Now that we are talking about it, I think the only rational stance any designer can have is to condemn it. The ADC should be rebuked and they should publicly apologize for giving the graphic design community a black eye.

Art Directors are not fine-art artists. Fine-art can do whatever it wants. It’s completely subjective because the presence of an audience is irrelevant (an idea that has unfortunately made fine-art irrelevant in most people’s eyes). Commercial Art/Graphic Design is different in that it is dependent on communicating with an intended audience. I don’t think this is good communication. Those that say the contrary are forgetting the function of the poster. Personally, this poster makes me feel as though any self respecting Art Director should totally agree with the ideas promoted by this image. Sarcasm isn’t funny unless everyone knows you’re not being serious. If sarcasm fails, then the communication is ineffective.

Coming from the ADC, it draws more attention and poses more thorny questions, but doesn’t manage to polish this piece beyond the point of shinola.

By the misspelling and mispronunciation, God’s holy name has been taken in vain and counted as nothing, in violation of the third commandment. “YHWH will not acquit him that taketh his name falsely.” (Exodus 20:7, falsely: Heb. shav, especially guile: decoy). To falsify his name and make it a decoy is a direct violation of the commandment.

The multitude of many peoples: the U.S.A. has people from all nations and tongues. Noise like the noise of the seas, like the rushing of mighty waters: the sound of automobile traffic rushing by. They shall flee far off ...like a rolling thing before the whirlwind: destruction, perhaps nuclear. At eveningtide trouble: according to God’s timetable it is now eveningtide. Before the morning they are no more: this may indicate the total destruction of the United States, i.e. wiped right off the map, for the land shadowing with wings could easily represent the United States with her “wings” of the so-called eagle (viz. phoenix).

Dear friends,

Happy to be greeting you again after a long lapse (last newsletter 2-17-06).

I almost left you for good. Most of you have probably not heard that I suffered a heart attack, March 4, 2006. This is why such a long lapse in communication. I just have not felt like writing. Please forgive me.

The heart attack resulted from a skiing accident. I did not say anything because I did not want to worry anyone. Very few people knew about it. Now that I have mended and things look much brighter, it seems time to let the secret out.

There is quite a story that goes along with it. I have not felt much like telling about it yet, but will before long. Not much has been done with the Apocalypse House website either during the time since the heart attack.

Time is quickly rolling around for my 2006-2007 Bimini trip. I am looking forward to a time of great creativity in painting.

Hi again Everyone,

If you have written to me recently and I have not yet answered, please forgive me. It is my intention to write back, but things have been busy. Please be patient, but if you think I need a reminder, I don't mind a little nudge. Sometimes letters fall to the bottom of my overactive in-box.

Just in case you're interested I have started an Ebay home page and just put together my first auction. It runs from now till Feb-24-06 00:44:58 PST. I'm not auctioning any of my own art work at this time, but will have some of my small paintings and scetches available in the future.

My present auction consists of antique craft magazines that belonged to Ann (Anna Mae Choate) Kox, my mother. She was also an artist and painted with acrylic, oil, and watercolor. She did some crafts as well, and was an accomplished master basket weaver. At some point I plan to put up a website in her commeration with pictures of her paintings and newsclippings of her accomplishments and many awards received throughout her lifetime.

TRIVIA: My mom became a den mother about the same time I joined the Cub Scouts. As I recall, my first encounter with the scouts was very strange and mysterious, and even little bit scary. I cannot recall exactly how I first heard about them, but somebody invited me to sit in on a den meeting. It was in someone's dimly lit basement, which added to the secrecy and mystery of the whole thing. It might as well have been a secret initiation of the Illuminati, or some other dark cult, as uneasy as I felt. For an eight-year-old kid it doesn't take much to be scary. When they asked me to join, there was such a mysterious air about it that it I began to wonder if it was a sin. It seemed like I was joining my first gang. I guess it didn't take me long to figure out it was just a bunch of other little kids, like me, playing games along with some big kids, the Cub Scout parents.

The normal hours are 10am - 3pm. But the Lawton Gallery will be open Wednesday night [March 23rd] for special extended hours, from 5pm - 8pm, to accomodate the general public who might not otherwise be able to attend.

The show ends Thursday [24th] at 3pm.

The concept of “Elohim The Apocalyptic Time Machine,” is very simple and at the same time quite complex. Elohim, God, exists in a limitless eternity, outside of our realm of measured time. According to Scripture he knows and sees the end from the beginning. This is what makes prophecy possible. He sees what has happened before we experience it. To him it has already taken place. All past, present and future are recorded in the eternal archives of the omniscient Elohim. At times he chooses to allow certain people to glimpse the future. This is a prophetic revelation, an apocalypse of things to come, an actual view of God’s memory. Since he holds all knowledge of past, present and future, Elohim is a virtual time capsule, a time machine: Elohim the Apocalyptic Time Machine.

Kox and Thompson feel that their paintings have been inspired and guided by the hand of Elohim, the Master of time and space, to allow others to see beyond the confines of the moment into the Eye of the Eternal.

Elohim is the Hebrew word we translate as “God,” and “apocalypse” is the New Testament word for revelation. The concept of “Elohim The Apocalyptic Time Machine,” is very simple and at the same time quite complex. Elohim, God, exists in a limitless eternity, outside of our realm of measured time. According to Scripture he knows and sees the end from the beginning. This is what makes prophecy possible. He sees what has happened before we experience it. To him it has already taken place. All past, present and future are recorded in the eternal archives of the omniscient Elohim. At times he chooses to allow certain people to glimpse the future. This is a prophetic revelation, an apocalypse of things to come, an actual view of God’s memory. Since he holds all knowledge of past, present and future, Elohim is a virtual time capsule, a time machine: Elohim the Apocalyptic Time Machine.

STATEMENT
The ridicule of Warner Sallman’s Head of Christ (focused upon in this exhibit) is not a derision of the Saviour, but an expose of a false image. It as a plagiarized fraud and not the Divine Image it is claimed to be. Scripture warns against a false Christ image that becomes a living icon, and an object of worship (Revelation 13:14-15). Satan’s plan is to be worshipped as God and Saviour (Isaiah 14:13-14; II Thessalonians 2:3-4; II Corinthians 11:14). The Warner Sallman Head of Christ has become the accepted authentic portrait of Christ, having been reproduced over a billion times since 1940.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Picture Perfect Jesus: The Glamorous Fraud
March 1, 2004, through June 30, 2004

The intention of my artwork is to cause people to think, to research and investigate, rather than accept the blind traditions of men. The ultimate goal is to entice people to search the Scriptures on their own. The usual focus of my work is to target specific errors and idolatries of Humanity, revealing their fallacies through Scriptural references. I also try to point out areas of interest that need further investigation, in hopes that someone will be able to carry it to the next level.

I have appropriated the Warner Sallman Head of Christ (1940) for the purpose of exposing it as a plagiarized fraud and not the Divine Image it is claimed to be.

Scripture warns against a false Christ image that becomes a living icon, and an object of worship (Revelation 13:14-15). Satan’s plan is to be worshipped as God and Saviour (Isaiah 14:13-14; II Thessalonians 2:3-4; II Corinthians 11:14).

The Warner Sallman Head of Christ has become the accepted authentic portrait of Christ, having been reproduced over a billion times since 1940.

Sallman was a shrewd advertising marketer. He had a ploy to mass-market his art to the world. He found a painting of Christ that would be the perfect image to glamorize and sell to the world. It was the creation of French artist, Leon Lhermitte (lare-meet). The painting titled Emmaus, also known as Friend of the Humble, is a backlit Christ at a supper table (1892).

Being a graphic artist, Sallman was skilled in copy work. He simply copied the bust of Christ from Lhermitte’s oil painting, transforming it into a charcoal drawing which he titled Son of Man. He never told anyone that he copied the image. There would have been no shame in copying (graphic artists do it all the time) if he had credited the original artist. But what glory is there in a copied image? Yet, if the drawing were original, received in a Divine Vision from God, it would be considered spectacular. So Sallman concocted an awesome story of a vision of light and an apparition of the Head of Christ.

By claiming the image as his own, Warner Sallman became a plagiarist, something he never admitted to.

The Son of Man charcoal drawing was first published in black and white on a magazine cover. Later it was mass-produced as a sepia print and sold to the people of America. In 1940, Sallman painted a full-color oil of his Son of Man, and renamed it Head of Christ. His colors, shading, highlighting, lay of the hair, folds of the robe, all matching the Lhermitte painting perfectly. The only difference, Sallman, being familiar with the glamour photographs of Hollywood movie stars, added the same type of backdrop to his Head of Christ. The result was the “Picture Perfect Jesus”.

Accompanied with the story of its Divine origin, Sallman’s Head of Christ met with mass-approval. Over 4,000,000 prints were sold in the first two years. By 1985 more than 500,000,000 copies had been sold. Today, 2004, the Head of Christ has been reproduced well over a billion times, and is the universally recognized portrait of Christ. This idol came with the stamp of authenticity. Who could doubt that this was the face of Christ when it came from God in a heavenly vision? Many revere it as a picture of God. It is the God and Saviour prayed to by the majority of the world’s Christian population. It has been warned against throughout Scripture. It is all part of Satan’s plan to rob glory from Yahweh.

Kox is friend, person of Christ

It was good to see the article by artist, Norbert H. Kox, after the negative remarks made by Father Hector Bolduc about Norbert’s art.

Norbert Kox, besides being one of the master artists of our time, is regarded by many people as a giving and loving human being. To give an example of his generosity, he showed me his personally developed glazing painting technique to help me on my own path as an artist.

My husband and I are honored to be among those Norbert calls friend. Therefore, I can tell you through personal knowledge that he is a person of Christ. He brings his beliefs to the canvas and challenges, others to seek as he has. He is nonjudgmental and has respect for other people. Norbert welcomes his friends without judging them. In my case, I am a student of Buddhism and other philosophies. He neither judges nor shows any disrespect regarding my spiritual journey.

It is with great interest to see Norbert’s artwork; besides the message, his execution of his techniques are magnificent.

Thank you, Norbert, for bringing your art and your message to us. We are so lucky to have such a talent in our community and be able to see his fantastic images and techniques in person. Our lives have been blessed with his friendship and knowledge.

Brother defends controversial artist

I am writing this in defense of my brother and artist, Norbert H. Kox. Not that he needs my help. He is as intelligent and well-spoken a man as you will ever be blessed enough to meet. I was there back in 1975 when Norb changed his life. I heard him speak of seeing crosses in the sky and inspirations. Having been raised Catholic, his first step was to become Super Catholic. He spent time researching what he deemed as phony religions. Not too many years went by when he seems to have sensed certain levels of hypocrisy within the history and operation of the Catholic Church, and moved his own beliefs into other Christian churches, such as Pentecostal. His research seems to have shown him that a truly personal relationship with God is possible, and I think he long ago walked away from any religion organized by man. His artwork’s purpose is to reveal the hypocrisy of many accepted religious teachings. In other words, it’s an extension of his true life’s work, which for the past 30 years has been research and analysis of the religions of men

Why does he not paint the glory of God instead of the hypocrisies of men? Because he chooses not to make you feel better, but to think and read, and question...

Priest’s letter about Kox shocks church elder

In my opinion Father Hector Bolduc is misguided. I’m a Christian and church elder, and shocked at Bolduc’s letter. Bolduc called Norbert Kox a bigot. A bigot is “one who is strongly partial to one’s own religion and is intolerant of those who differ.” Norbert loves all people of all religions, is pro-Christ and against all Satanic activity.

Norbert is a Christian, showing loving concern for others and has an ultimate goal to entice people to search and read the Scriptures on their own. Bolduc's letter is an arrogant, stubborn assertion of his own dogmatic opinions and beliefs. Moreover, Bolduc boldly uses false and slanderous statements with the intent of hurting Norbert’s reputation.

I may not agree with all of Norbert’s works, but I always strive to be open-minded and seek first to under stand.

Certainly, current global events cry out for a Christian “wake-up call.” I believe Norbert Kox is our alarm clock, and it’s ringing loud and clear.

Greetings friends,

Your help is needed, and will be greatly appreciated. Please offer your input to counteract the witch hunt that has been launched against me because of my Apocalyptic Art.

Here is a recent article that enraged a fanatical priest to slander me. He is the same cult leader who stirred a controversy over my Neville Museum exhibit in 1999. That time the controversy raged for 3 1/2 months.

Following the "Spiritual Journey" article, is the hate article by this same priest who stirred the previous controversy over my solo show in Green Bay in 1999. Also I have included my statement for my upcoming Washington DC show.

My good name has been gravely maligned and slandered by Father Hector Bolduc in his vicious hate letter "This isn't art" (The Green Bay New-Chronicle, Monday, February 2, 2004; Page 13, Opinion).

Norbert Kox would have to live well past the ripe old age of 200 if he were to paint everything he’d like.The acclaimed New Franken artist has dozens of folders he counted a while back, and there were well over 100 strewn throughout his house, each stuffed with bits of paper he pulls out of his shirt pocket whenever an idea springs to mind.And Kox, who has long caused some stirs with his vivid apocalyptic art, is not an artist short on ideas.“I can’t keep up,” he said. “The ideas keep coming to me. I can never get ahead of it.”He keeps track of his visions through a trick he learned from a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay professor back in the l980s, which was to sketch his thoughts as they came rather than letting them evaporate by waiting until he had a spare moment to jot them down.

“I always kept paper in my pocket, and the more I did that, the more ideas would come, almost like exercise, where your muscles get stronger,” said Kox.

A painter since the early 1960s, the former biker has long dedicated his work to his spiritual journey. The spiritual imagery of fire and brimstone, serpents and false idols dominate Kox’s intricate work as he explores ideas, challenges tradition and takes on the ideology of mainstream religion with humor, wisdom and bold brush strokes that are his own visual parables of the apocalypse.He hopes his work, which has earned international acclaim and has been shown in galleries and museums from New York to Australia, helps generate ideas and inspire viewers to begin their own spiritual exploration.

“The main thing is I hope that people will somehow try to think for themselves,” he said. “I want to get people stirred up enough to do some questioning, arid not to be led like blind sheep.”

His efforts have often sparked controversy; earning letters of protest on newspaper editorial pages and causing loud vocal stirs at gallery exhibitions.“When it first started up, it was hurtful,” said Kox. “I wondered how could a person so misunderstand what I was saying.”But then, in his soothing voice, Kox would explain his motives and his ideas about the imagery that makes up much of mainstream religion.And people calmed down.

“I’ve been able to walk up to people and calmly start talking to them, and as I would begin to explain, all of a sudden their whole composure would change, once the interpretation was started for them,” he said.

His latest project for a show at a gallery in Washington D.C. — is a series of works based on the 1940 Warner Sallman painting “Head of Christ,” a billion-selling image that has become almost universally known as the likeness of Jesus.Sallman said it came to him in a heavenly vision, but according to Kox’s research, the artist actually plagiarized the image from an 1892 work by French artist Leon Lhermitte featuring Christ at the supper table with two of his disciples. Sallman’s painting is nearly an exact replica of Lhermitte’s Jesus, although no credit was ever given to the French artist.Either way, the image is a false idol in Kox’s eyes, and he gloriously takes it on in the series “Picture Perfect Jesus: The Glamorous Fraud,” featuring the “Head of Christ” in numerous incarnations, including one as “Sallmanstein” — “I made the top of his head flatter, and there are bolts sticking out of his neck,” Kox said — and a fish head that plays on the Artist’s name.

The pieces— many large-scale works that are painted while flat— had their first showing at an informal exhibition in Bimini, a tropical island where Kox has spent a great deal of time since he discovered it in 1999. It is there, in the sparsely populated, sun-drenched setting that he creates many of his works, drinking in the atmosphere for spiritual rejuvenation.Since the “Head of Christ” image — which has sold more than 1 billion copies worldwide— graced the walls of several of the island’s churches, he was a bit hesitant, but he went ahead with the show anyway.

“There was a stress level there,” said the artist, who once had to calm a viewer so offended and upset he was screaming. “But as soon as I started to explain it, they caught right on.” So have art critics around the world, who’ve praised Kox’s symbolic, metaphoric work, calling him “one of America’s most important visionary artists.” It’s high praise, indeed, especially for an artist who’s managed to have his work banned by nearly ever major religious group, but Kox isn’t influenced by the opinions of others, and the art that lives inside him will continue to pour out, flooding his canvases with life.It’s always been that way.

“When I started painting I was just doing surrealist painting of ideas coming out of my head,” Kox said.“At that time I didn’t realize there was a spiritual message for me, but when I look back on it, I see subtle communications. It was exciting to discover how that worked.”Kox’s first medium of choice was oil, but a stint at UWGB introduced him to acrylics, which have a faster drying time and helped speed up the artistic process for Kox.Now, he usually merges the two mediums, using oils for some of the more detailed part of his work.In addition, he has dabbled in photography, has written numerous essays addressing religious, issues, is working on a book, "Deceived by Jesus,” which will be part memoir, part expose, and uses his auto body repair background to create welded works such as sculptures and frames that expand his paintings beyond natural borders.

Lately, he’s been working with his son, Jeremy, in a business they call Raw Earth Visionaries, teaming up to create large-scale landscape sculpture including an elaborate sun dial that was on display as part of the Neville Public Museum’s recent Art Annual.

“It’s been a real wonderful experience for both of us,” said Kox, who has no plans to let the controversies he’s stirred over the years influence his work.

“There’s still no compromise,” he said.

For an artist, how could there be?

This isn’t art

It appears the Neville Museum, funded with taxpayers’ money, has not learned its lesson. Once more it has consented to displaying “art” by one Norbert Kox, a confirmed hater of Christianity and Catholicism. His display at the Neville in 1999 scandalized the community by its vile attacks on Christianity and in particular against Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Catholic sacramentals.

The recent article in This Week indicates that Kox is troubled by the thought that an artist named Sallman may have plagiarized the painting of the head of Christ from another artist. Perhaps Kox should consider the fact that he himself should be accused of plagiarism as he called his 1999 exhibit “To Hell and Back,” which any artist should know is the name of a famous Audie Murphy book and movie. Then Kox states that he had “bolts sticking out of his (Christ’s) neck.” Could that have been plagiarized from another famous movie called “Frankenstein?” After all, Kox does live in New Franken. Coincidence?

For local museums and news papers to promote the works of a well-known anti-Catholic bigot shows their lack of concern for their public, if the same works were directed in the same manner against blacks, Jews or Indians, they would be labeled hate crimes and withdrawn from public view. But because they attack Christianity; they are excused as art.

In its 1999 release, the Neville lists the following among Kox’s qualifications as an artist:

“A young man involved in drugs and alcohol, a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang and a transformed, reformed hermit.” We all know what drugs and alcohol can do to one’s mind and brain. Mental institutions are filled with such unfortunates. Kox’s art is proof of his unfortunate surrender to the lower animal instincts.

I do not doubt his claim of

going through hell. However, I don’t think he ever returned. His Satanic-dominated “art” is proof that the devil himself was his mentor. Taxpayers of Brown County aren’t you concerned that your tax dollars are being used to fund a museum which insults you? Let the local officials know?

Norbert Kox Responds to Vicious and Libelous Attack in Priest’s Hate Letter

My response to The Green Bay New-Chronicle, Monday, February 2, 2004, Page 13, Opinion, This isn’t art, by Father Hector Bolduc.

Please allow me to address some of the issues presented by Father Bolduc:

I love all people of all religions and nationalities. My work is pro Christ, and is against all Satanic activity. In my Apocalyptic artwork, my stand against the false traditions and idolatries of modern organized religion and society, is as obvious as a skull and crossbones on a poison bottle, warning all who see to beware. My Apocalyptic work is against the counterfeit universal Christ of the modern world. It is not against Christianity. I am a follower of Christ and his teachings (since 1975). I refer to him Yesu (yay-soo) according to the Biblical Languages [confirmed in many of today's languages of the world]. I am a Christian, a follower of Christ and his teachings (but not by the name Jesus, and not through organized religion).

The art that Father Bolduc refers to, in the Neville's recent 59th Art Annual, was not my Apocalyptic work. It was a sundial titled, "Stand of the Typha." Typha means cattail. It is a site-specific landscape sculpture, created by my son, Jeremy and me. This collaborative sculpture is not controversial.

He infers that I am an alcoholic and a drug addict. Almost 30 years ago (1975) with the help of God I repented and totally reformed. Since that time I have lived in total surrender to God and the leading of the Holy Spirit. My time is spent studying and researching the things of God. My Biblical, religious and historical studies have uncovered many false traditions within the beliefs of our society. My artworks tend to expose falsehoods and reveal truths. If the falsehoods are sacred, not everyone is happy to see them publicized.

If all of Father Bolduc's accusations were true, they would not be valid reasons for dismissal of my artwork. In fact they would be “qualifications” that would place me along side of many of the great artists of Modern and past History.

The title, To Hell and Back was the decision of the museum staff. It was not plagiarized. Plagiarism means to present and take credit for another's work as your own. Sallman claimed the Head of Christ as his original work, when it was not. When I appropriate someone's work, and incorporate elements of it into my own, I never claim that I am the originator of the other artist's work. It is usually something so recognizable that no one would ever think I was claiming authorship, like the bolts in Frankenstein's neck. I used them on the Sallman head, to show what a monster has been created with this false image. It became a worshipped idol, in essence, a false god.

The artist’s statement for my upcoming show at America Oh Yes Gallery in Washington, DC, should clear things up:

Norbert Kox loves God with his whole heart and follows the teachings of Christ. The ridicule of Warner Sallman’s Head of Christ (focused upon in this exhibit) is not a derision of the Saviour, but an expose of a false image.

Picture Perfect Jesus: The Glamorous Fraud
March 1, 2004, through June 30, 2004

The intention of my artwork is to cause people to think, to research and investigate, rather than accept the blind traditions of men. The ultimate goal is to entice people to search the Scriptures on their own. The usual focus of my work is to target specific errors and idolatries of Humanity, revealing their fallacies through Scriptural references. I also try to point out areas of interest that need further investigation, in hopes that someone will be able to carry it to the next level.

I have appropriated the Warner Sallman Head of Christ (1940) for the purpose of exposing it as a plagiarized fraud and not the Divine Image it is claimed to be.

Scripture warns against a false Christ image that becomes a living icon, and an object of worship (Revelation 13:14-15). Satan’s plan is to be worshipped as God and Saviour (Isaiah 14:13-14; II Thessalonians 2:3-4; II Corinthians 11:14).

The Warner Sallman Head of Christ has become the accepted authentic portrait of Christ, having been reproduced over a billion times since 1940.

Sallman was a shrewd advertising marketer. He had a ploy to mass-market his art to the world. He found a painting of Christ that would be the perfect image to glamorize and sell to the world. It was the creation of French artist, Leon Lhermitte (lare-meet). The painting titled Emmaus, also known as Friend of the Humble, is a backlit Christ at a supper table (1892).

Being a graphic artist, Sallman was skilled in copy work. He simply copied the bust of Christ from Lhermitte’s oil painting, transforming it into a charcoal drawing which he titled Son of Man. He never told anyone that he copied the image. There would have been no shame in copying (graphic artists do it all the time) if he had credited the original artist. But what glory is there in a copied image? Yet, if the drawing were original, received in a Divine Vision from God, it would be considered spectacular. So Sallman concocted an awesome story of a vision of light and an apparition of the Head of Christ.

By claiming the image as his own, Warner Sallman became a plagiarist, something he never admitted to.

The Son of Man charcoal drawing was first published in black and white on a magazine cover. Later it was mass-produced as a sepia print and sold to the people of America. In 1940, Sallman painted a full-color oil of his Son of Man, and renamed it Head of Christ. His colors, shading, highlighting, lay of the hair, folds of the robe, all matching the Lhermitte painting perfectly. The only difference, Sallman, being familiar with the glamour photographs of Hollywood movie stars, added the same type of backdrop to his Head of Christ. The result was the “Picture Perfect Jesus”.

Accompanied with the story of its Divine origin, Sallman’s Head of Christ met with mass-approval. Over 4,000,000 prints were sold in the first two years. By 1985 more than 500,000,000 copies had been sold. Today, 2004, the Head of Christ has been reproduced well over a billion times, and is the universally recognized portrait of Christ. This idol came with the stamp of authenticity. Who could doubt that this was the face of Christ when it came from God in a heavenly vision? Many revere it as a picture of God. It is the God and Saviour prayed to by the majority of the world’s Christian population. It has been warned against throughout Scripture. It is all part of Satan’s plan to rob glory from Yahweh.

The Neville Public Museum, 59th Art Annual, opens Friday, November 14, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM.

My son Jeremy and I are exhibiting our first collaboration. We have built an installation around our forged and welded steel sculpture, Stand of the Typha (Latin: "Cattail"). The sculpture is designed as an accurately working sundial. It is on loan from the collection of Paul and Linda Koch, DePere, WI. Through the courtesy and cooperation of Mr. and Mrs. Koch, the sculpture has been removed from their landscape and loaned back to us for the Neville installation.

Jeremy is a Landscape Architect, and a Principal of Ground One Enterprises, DePere, WI. He has done some small sculpture in the past and has now decided to work larger, in motifs that will lend themselves to the environment and be site specific to the landscapes he is working with. To accomplish this, we joined together in June, 2003, to form Raw Earth Visionaries (REV).

If you are in the Green Bay area, please stop by the Neville and see Stand of the Typha. Jeremy and I will both be present at the Neville opening to meet and talk with you.
